FINE ARTS
Chorus    Â
Students have an opportunity to take part in the combined middle/high school chorus. Designed to provide exposure to a wide spectrum of sacred music, high school and middle school students combine into one large ensemble, meeting three times per week. Repertoire is selected from a variety of time periods, from works of the Late Renaissance and Baroque periods, through the late 20th Century, and even early 21st Century compositions. Chorus students are also introduced to early ear training techniques, particularly solfege skills, as well as basic key signature identification, and the reading of both treble and bass clefs. The chorus takes part in two major concerts each year as well as in other performances. Advanced students also may audition for the All-State Chorus.
Ensemble
The BCS Ensemble is a select, auditioned group of students in Grades 9-12 and this class meets twice per week. Prerequisite requirements consist of simultaneous participation in the high school choir, although exceptions may be made with special permission. Students who wish to consider auditioning should have a particular interest in the study of a variety of music styles, as well furthering their study of music theory, and sight singing. Students participating in ensemble must be of good academic standing and be prepared to practice professional rehearsal conduct. The ensemble travels throughout the year to different performance venues, as well as taking part in a concert at the end of each semester.
Band
The High School Band provides an opportunity for students who play musical instruments to perform at many different school and community functions. The band rehearses and performs concert band literature of varying styles and difficulty. The music is selected mostly from hymns, praise & worship songs, patriotic and classical music. The band will perform several times in the community as well as school concerts throughout the school year.
The Middle School Band is designed to expand on musical concepts taught in the Elementary Band, such as tone, dynamics, tempo and phrasing. The music tends to have more individual parts which may include harmony to the melody, counterpoint and separate melodies. The students learn greater independence and discernment as they learn how their part blends with the rest of the band. Most meters are duple or compound with an introduction to an occasional compound/duple meter song. Most song selections are from hymns, patriotic and classical music.
Art
Middle School Art builds on the fundamentals learned in the elementary grades. Units on colors and design, drawing, painting, and 3D design merge to develop an understanding of the creative process and to further artistic skills. A variety of media is explored and the works of famous artists are discussed and used as examples to provide an introduction to art history at this level.
Building on the middle school art curriculum, high school art students delve deeper into the creative process. Artistic skills are honed in increasingly complex projects, such as watercolors, acrylics, pastels, and oil pastels. This course is designed to give students the basic art skills that will enable them to reach their full artistic potential.
